Role of Librarians in Distance Education at Brazilian Universities

Resumo: This article aims to understand how librarians work in the context of distance education in Brazilian universities, considering teaching, research and extension actions. It is characterized by a field study carried out with librarians from universities in six Brazilian cities; it uses the content analysis method and presents categories that reflect their professional practice. Regarding to the role of librarians in distance learning, of the six librarians who took part in the research, four said that they carry out this activity as part of their basic training; one said that he was working as an instructional designer, and the other said that he plays two roles: tutor and content designer. With regard to the public that librarians serve, six user profiles were mentioned: distance learning coordinator, content teacher, teacher-tutor, instructional designer, librarians and distance learning students. Regarding to librarians' perceptions of their participation in distance education, they have a positive view of their role and confirm their relevance within distance education teams. It can therefore be inferred that librarians can occupy and take on other roles as information professionals in the context of distance education, such as: teacher, tutor, instructional designer, among others.

Se caracteriza por un estudio de campo realizado con bibliotecarios de universidades de seis ciudades brasileñas; utiliza el método de análisis de contenido y presenta categorías que traducen su práctica profesional. En cuanto a la función de los bibliotecarios en la EAD, cuatro profesionales dijeron que ejercen la actividad inherente a su formación básica; uno dijo que trabaja como diseñador instruccional, y otro dijo que suma dos papeles, el de tutor y el de diseñador de contenidos. En cuanto al público al que atienden los bibliotecarios, se mencionaron seis perfiles de usuarios: coordinador de EaD, profesor-tutor de contenidos, profesor-tutor, diseñador instruccional, bibliotecarios y estudiantes de EaD. En cuanto a la percepción de los bibliotecarios sobre su participación en EaD, tienen una visión positiva sobre su desempeño y confirman su relevancia dentro de los equipos de EaD. Se infiere, entonces, que los bibliotecarios pueden ocupar y asumir otros roles como profesionales de la información en el contexto de la educación a distancia, tales como: profesor, tutor, diseñador instruccional, entre otros.O presente artigo tem o objetivo de compreender a atuação dos bibliotecários no contexto da educação a distância em instituições de ensino superior brasileiras, considerando ações de ensino, pesquisa e extensão. Caracteriza-se por um estudo de campo realizado com bibliotecários de seis cidades brasileiras; usa o método de análise de conteúdo e apresenta categorias que traduzem a sua prática profissional. No tocante à atuação dos bibliotecários na EaD, dos seis bibliotecários participantes da pesquisa, quatro profissionais falaram que exercem a atividade inerente à sua formação básica; um afirmou estar trabalhando como designer instrucional, e o outro disse que soma dois papéis, o de tutor e o de conteudista. Concernente ao público que os bibliotecários atendem, foram citados seis perfis de usuários: coordenador de EaD, professor conteudista, professor-tutor, designer instrucional, bibliotecários e alunos de EaD. Quanto à percepção dos bibliotecários sobre a sua participação na EaD, eles têm uma visão positiva a respeito da sua atuação e confirmam a sua relevância dentro das equipes de EaD.
