Resumo: | As one of the largest prison populations in the world, Brazil is facing an uncontrollable situation where government institutions fail to provide any kind of positive outcome to the problems faced on a daily basis. Inmates live in overcrowded, unhealthy, degenerate establishments. We are led to ask ourselves: What dictates govern the present prison crisis? We intend to draw a theoretical outline of the main problems of the Brazilian Penitentiary System analyzing them in perspective with the modern criminological theories, thus proposing new directions of the issue.
