An analysis on the current concept of citizenship

Resumo: This paper analyses some characteristics on the current concept of citizenship. Regarding this goal, in a first moment, we will discuss the concept of citizenship conceived by the English sociologist Thomas Humphrey Marshall; and, secondly, we will approach Décio Saes’ critical investigation concerned to the Marshallian paradigm, as well as the dynamics of the introduction of citizenship in capitalist relationships. Finally, our study reflects on the political and social processes that led to a new conception of citizenship from the 1990’s on in Brazil, which has been configured into an unaccountability of the State concerned to social problems.

O artigo analisa algumas características da concepção atual de cidadania. Com essa finalidade, num primeiro momento, discute-se a concepção clássica de cidadania formulada pelo autor inglês Thomas H. Marshall para, posteriormente, abordar a análise crítica de Décio Saes a respeito da formulação marshalliana, bem como a dinâmica da instauração da cidadania nas relações capitalistas.
