Resumo: The article focuses the North American historical context of ends of the century XIX and beginnings of the XX, worrying in presenting the social crisis resulting from the extraordinary economical dynamics of the period and the social discourses that emerged as interpretation of that new picture. There is particular relevance to the movement known as Reformism and testing theoretical it unfolds, assisting in the definition of social sciences in the country with regard to issues, concerns, and initial demarcation of disciplinary boundaries.
