Resumo: We aim to analyze the novel Father Goriot (1835), by Honoré de Balzac, and the short story “The Mandarin” (1880), by Eça de Queirós. Both narratives present versions of the literary motif known as “murdered mandarin” or “mandarin paradox”, widely used in the 19th century. We aim to compare how this theme is represented in the two texts, based mainly on the considerations of Martins (1963-1964) and Berrini (1992). Despite the different treatments, we conclude that the two writers insert this theme to address the social ambition of the characters, namely Eugène de Rastignac, in the Balzaquian novel, and Teodoro, in the Queirosian tale.

As duas narrativas apresentam versões do motivo literário conhecido como “mandarim assassinado” ou “paradoxo do mandarim”, bastante utilizado no século XIX. Almejamos comparar como esse tema é representado nos dois textos, apoiando-nos sobretudo nas considerações de Martins (1963-1964) e Berrini (1992).
