Imperialism and middle classes: civil society and political power on the margins of capitalism

Resumo: This article addresses the general issue of the relationship between classes and political power in capitalist social formations on the periphery of imperialism. Based on the Leninist theory of imperialism, we argue that the superstructures of the capitalist mode of production in these regions also develop differently from their counterparts in central capitalism, creating a restricted social space that, although based on the radical exclusion of the masses, develops itself on the active base of the middle class. For this purpose, we mobilize authors such as Agustín Cueva, Florestan Fernandes, Nicos Poulantzas, and others to unveil the anatomy of this space and its function to the capitalist political economy.

Con base en la teoría leninista del imperialismo, sostenemos que las superestructuras del modo de producción capitalista en estas regiones también se desarrollan de manera diferente a sus contrapartes en el capitalismo central, creando un espacio social restringido que, aunque basado en la exclusión radical de las masas, se desarrolla sobre una base activa de clase media. Para eso, movilizamos a autores como Agustín Cueva, Florestan Fernandes, Nicos Poulantzas y otros para señalar la anatomía de este espacio y su función en la economía política capitalista.Este artigo aborda o problema geral da relação entre as classes e o poder político nas formações sociais capitalistas na periferia do imperialismo. Tomando como base a teoria leninista acerca do imperialismo, argumentamos que as superestruturas do modo de produção capitalista nessas regiões também se desenvolvem de maneira distinta de suas contrapartes no capitalismo central, criando um espaço social restrito que, ainda que pautado na exclusão radical das massas, se desenvolve sobre a base ativa da classe média.
