Clóvis Moura and Florestan Fernandes: Marxist interpretations of slavery, abolition and the emergence of free labor in Brazil

Resumo: The article analyzes the theoretical thinking of Clóvis Moura and Florestan Fernandes. At first, it analyzes points of convergence between these two authors, especially the relationship between slavery and capitalist accumulation; the importance of blacks as a dynamic agent of the social slave order; and the critical and materialistic interpretation of the myth of racial democracy. Subsequently, divergences between them are worked out in three more aspects: characteristics of slavery; the abolitionist process; the emergence of free labor. This approach is made by analyzing the comparison of works from the structuring period of both authors, between 1950 and 1970, with their last books, published at the turn of the 80's to 90's. It is concluded that, despite the strong convergences between Clóvis and Florestan, they present different lines to think about race relations, slavery and capitalism in Brazil.

En un primer momento analiza los puntos de convergencia entre estos dos autores, especialmente la relación entre esclavitud y acumulación capitalista; la importancia de los negros como agente dinámico del orden social esclavista; y la interpretación crítica y materialista del mito de la democracia racial. Posteriormente, las divergencias entre ellos se resuelven en tres aspectos más: características de la esclavitud; el proceso abolicionista; el surgimiento del trabajo libre. Este planteamiento se realiza mediante el análisis comparativo de obras del período de estructuración de ambos autores, entre 1950 y 1970, con sus úlimos libros, publicados a finales de los 80 a los 90. Se concluye que, a pesar de las fuertes convergencias entre Clóvis y Florestan, ellos presentan diferentes líneas para pensar las relaciones raciales, la esclavitud y el capitalismo en Brasil.O artigo faz uma incursão sobre os pensamentos de Clóvis Moura e Florestan Fernandes. Para tanto, em um primeiro momento analisa pontos de convergência entre esses dois autores, especialmente a relação entre escravidão e acumulação capitalista; a importância do negro como agente dinamizador da ordem social escravocrata; e a interpretação crítica e materialista do mito da democracia racial. Posteriormente, são trabalhadas divergências entre eles em mais três aspectos: características da escravidão; o processo abolicionista; a emergência do trabalho livre. Essa abordagem é feita pela análise do cotejamento das obras do período estruturante de ambos autores, compreendido entre 1950 e 1970, com os seus últimos livros, publicados na virada da década de 80 para 90.
