Resumo: The purpose of this paper is to analyze chroniclers’ descriptions from Portuguese America of the 16th Century about the indigenous Other, more specifically the ones who, referring to terrifying and/or dangerous situations, mobilized marvelous images more or less known in the reports of medieval travelers. Therefore, we will more closely introduce the subject of the marvelous in the colonial context and analyze the available historiography on the subject. When analyzing the sources, we will articulate them with the concept of “rhetoric of otherness” by François Hartog. In the conclusion, we will approach the dynamics between continuities and ruptures of the marvelous medieval imagination, besides analyzing the chroniclers’ alterity using the considerations of Pedro Martínez García, Tzvetan Todorov and Klaas Woortmann.
