Exemplary legacy: the narrative of life and virtues in the “Revista Adventista” death notices

This article analyzes how “Revista Adventista” portrays the lives of those whose memory is recorded in the death section of the magazine. The analysis was restricted to publications from June 2020 to September 2021, a period in which the magazine increased the number of pages in the “Memory” section, in order to meet the growing demand due to the COVID-19 victims. From this analysis, it was possible to perceive that the death notices focus more on aspects related to the life trajectory than on the death itself. The biographical memories of the deceased follow a eulogistic pattern, with an emphasis on virtues, which portray life models and important elements of the Adventist imaginary. This perception reinforces the findings of other studies, which consider that the Protestant culture has played an important role in the dissemination of social and religious values through biographical narratives linked to death.
