Resumo: The present work aims to investigate the effects of a particular aspect of metaphors ‒ that is, its saturation (e.g., DUNN, 2011) ‒ upon the cognitive organization of discourse genres. This endeavor comprises (i) the identification of metaphor expressions in texts from various genres, namely, lyrics and editorial cartoons, and (ii) the analysis of metaphor saturation on the basis of prototypical aspects of aush genres. Results demonstrate that metaphor saturation follows different patterns in different genres. In the literary domain, this aspect is likely to be restricted to a single text; whereas as to critical journalism, although it may take place in terms of metaphor niches (VEREZA, 2007; 2010a), such an aspect often spreads intertextually. Besides, metaphor saturation seems to function as a critical feature for genre identification and categorization ‒ both in analytical and cognitive terms ‒, since it manages to meet some of their communicative purposes.

Besides, metaphor saturation seems to function as a critical feature for genre identification and categorization ‒ both in analytical and cognitive terms ‒, since it manages to meet some of their communicative purposes.
