Glancing at childhoods in the Semiarid

Triggering some flashes that glance at the childhood universe, this essay presents discussions – based on a cultural, socio-historical and environmental panorama – from a place/time nowadays called Brazilian Northeastern Semiarid. These discussions aim, through problematizations,  to provoke reflections on the construction of childhoods. Thus, the Northeastern Semiarid and all its diversity rediscovered, despite the contradictions and huge environmental threats should be seen also from the point of view of subjectivity. Is it possible, then, to speak of a child subjectivity of the Semiarid? More specifically, how to think and approach their childhoods? These questions guided the essay, which was based on analyzing cordel (string) literature, photographic records and content coming from direct interaction with children in different contexts. The idiosyncrasies of the Semiarid, its historical shortcomings and the many social constructs of this place/time also forged the human in different manners, despite some possible common apprehensions. Childhoods, added to the legacy of the Western world, followed, took part, created and withered in the very movement of coming-to-be of the Semiarid.
