Wefts in the city: a journey of reflection and research about material culture in the Brazilian cities

Resumo: Life in Brazilian cities carries singularities that, in most cases, are originated from Brazilian people singularities. Submerged in a context widely identified as "third world ", our cities bear witness tovitality of a heterogeneous society (in its ethnic composition, and its social structure), of great cultural wealth, but also of profound adversity arising from poverty. The Brazilian urbanization was carried by a dramatic trajectory of fractures and uprooting focusing on great population contingents who, gradually, were transformed into an urban citizen mass. This paper shows a thinking about the wefts in this context.

Submersas em um contexto amplamente identificado como de “terceiro mundo”, nossas cidades testemunham a vitalidade de uma sociedade diversa (em sua composição étnica) e desigual (em sua estruturação social), de grande riqueza cultural, mas também de profundas adversidades oriundas da condição de pobreza. No Brasil, o fenômeno de urbanização comumente associado à modernização e desenvolvimento econômico, social e cultural, fez-se acompanhar por uma trajetória dramática de fraturas e desenraizamentos de grandes contingentes populacionais que, pouco a pouco, viram-se transformar em uma massa urbana de cidadãos anônimos.
