Resumo: The location and distribution of urban areas in the territory is one of the factors that influence the definition and performance of its main functions. The urban centers in colonial Brazil, in addition to playing the role of commercial and administrative centers, were for the development of religious function, often already present even before its official foundation. This paper discusses the role of natural waterways, particularly the Paraiba do Sul River, in the social and economic formation, as well as in the urban space configuration of the city Campos dos Goytacazes, north of the Rio de Janeiro State.
