Strategies of food and nutritional education at the Technical College of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro

Resumo: Food and nutrition education is an important tool for promoting food and nutrition security and for forming healthy and sustainable eating habits. The objective was to identify the actions promoted by the Technical College of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (CTUR), in favor of food and nutrition education and food and nutrition security, including during the Covid-19 pandemic. Data were collected, between March and August 2020, through interviews and questionnaires, with the participation of CTUR students and teachers. Of the 79 students who participated in the survey, 60.8% brought ready meals from home to school and only 6.3% used the university restaurant. During the school period, 51.9% of the students interviewed consumed little nutritious foods such as fried snacks and 63.3% of the students consumed cookies. Of the 68 CTUR professors, only 13 responded to the form and most of them, consisting of 84.6%, claimed to address the issue of food in the discipline under their responsibility. It was noticed that actions are developed by the institution that promote food and nutrition education. CTUR had a small agroecological production that supported the classes. However, such actions did not include students from all courses. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic interfered with the students' diet, showing that the consumption of fruits and vegetables decreased significantly. Some measures, among these, the construction of a cafeteria in the school environment, which could minimize the situation found and dialoguing with practical actions for the promotion of Food and Nutrition Education.
