The status of arguments in abstract argumentation frameworks. A tableaux method

Resumo: Dung’s argumentation frameworks are formalisms widely used to model interaction among arguments. Although their study has been profusely developed in the field of Artificial Intelligence, it is not common to see its treatment among those less connected to computer science within the logical-philosophical community. In this paper we propose to bring to that audience a proof-theory for argument justification based on tableaux, very similar to those the Logic students are familiar with. The tableaux enable to calculate whether an argument or subset of arguments are accepted or rejected in accordance to Dung’s preferred and grounded extension-based semantics. Soundness and completeness results regarding those semantics are provided.

Aunque su estudio se ha desarrollado profusamente en el campo de la Inteligencia Artificial, no es frecuente su tratamiento entre los menos vinculados a la informática dentro de la comunidad lógico-filosófica. En este trabajo nos proponemos acercar a ese público una prueba-teoría para la justificación de argumentos basada en tableaux, muy similares a aquellos con los que están familiarizados los estudiantes de Lógica. Los tableaux permiten calcular si un argumento o subconjunto de argumentos son aceptados o rechazados de acuerdo con la semántica basada en la extensión preferida y fundamentada de Dung. Se proporcionan resultados de solidez y completitud con respecto a esa semántica.As estruturas de argumentação de Dung são formalismos amplamente utilizados para modelar a interação entre argumentos. Embora seu estudo tenha sido profusamente desenvolvido no campo da Inteligência Artificial, não é comum ver seu tratamento entre aqueles menos ligados à ciência da computação dentro da comunidade lógico-filosófica. Neste artigo, propomos levar a esse público uma teoria de prova para justificação de argumentos baseada em tableaux, muito semelhante àquela com a qual os estudantes de lógica estão familiarizados. Os tableaux permitem calcular se um argumento ou subconjunto de argumentos é aceito ou rejeitado de acordo com a semântica baseada em extensão preferida e fundamentada de Dung.
