The relation and difficulties of students with mathematics: a topic for investigation

Resumo: This text presents and discusses a particular type of studies into therelation and difficulties of students with mathematics as a possibility forinvestigation in the field of mathematics education. It takes as its reference three studies that, among others in this field, investigate how students organize theirinterests, representations, sensitive experiences and "their logic" withmathematical knowledge; what difficulties arise in this process and what theyreveal about teacher-training processes. One of the studies that is still inprogress seeks to characterize, map and understand the relation of studentsfrom a large urban center and their difficulties with mathematics, and to discussthe weight of the social context, the curricular demands of the teaching systemin question and the negotiations between teachers and students ofmathematics. By highlighting questions, focuses, strategies, methodologies andstudy results, a combination of elements that reveals contributions fromresearch activity, the impact of educational policies and relationships betweenthe two also becomes apparent.

Tomam-se como referência três estudos que, junto a outros, nessa área, investigam: como se articulam os interesses dos alunos, suas representações, suas experiências sensíveis e “suas lógicas” com o conhecimento matemático; que dificuldades são geradas nesse processo e o que elas informam aos processos de formação docente. Um dos estudos, ainda em andamento, objetiva caracterizar, mapear e compreender a relação de alunos de um grande centro urbano e suas dificuldades com a Matemática e discutir o peso do contexto social, das exigências curriculares do sistema de ensino em questão e das negociações entre quem ensina e quem aprende Matemática. Ao destacar questões, focos, estratégias, metodologias e resultados das pesquisas, explicita-se também um conjunto de elementos que permitem entrever contribuições da atividade de pesquisa, o impacto de políticas educativas para o ensino de Matemática e as relações entre ambas.
