The interdependence between arithmetical operations and students’ performance in mathematics

Resumo: This research is aimed at analyzing the FAN TAN game participants’performance concerning the interdependence between the basic arithmeticaloperations. In order to do this, forty-eight students attending the third and fifthgrades at elementary public schools in Toledo - PR were investigated. The gameparticipants were organized in groups according to their math performance atschool. At first, working with this game of rules involved the understanding and practice of the rules with multiplication and division operations. Afterwards,according to an experiment with a group in Geneva, some problem situationswere proposed to the subjects, involving interdependences between addition andsubtraction calculations. Through the analysis of the results, it was verified thatmost of the research participants are beginning to make relative addiction andsubtraction calculations. The interdependences established were related to thestudents’ performance at school.

The interdependences established were related to thestudents’ performance at school. A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar as condutas dos participantes do jogo FAN TAN, referentes às interdependências entre as operações aritméticas fundamentais. Para tanto, foram investigados quarenta e oito alunos pertencentes à terceira e à quinta série do Ensino Fundamental de escolas públicas de Toledo-PR. Os participantes foram organizados em grupos, segundo o rendimento escolar apresentado em matemática. O trabalho com o jogo de regras envolveu, em um primeiro momento, a compreensão e a prática das regras, em que estavam presentes as operações de multiplicação e divisão e, num segundo momento, conforme o experimento do grupo de Genebra, foram propostas aos sujeitos situações-problema que envolviam as interdependências entre as adições e as subtrações. Através da análise dos resultados, contatou-se que a maioria dos participantes da pesquisa está iniciando a realização de adições e subtrações relativas.
