The computational game simcity 4 and its pedagogical potentialities for math classes

Resumo: In this article we present the results of a research in which weinvestigated the strategies the subjects used to solve mathematical problemsraised by the structure, the action and the pedagogical mediation with thecomputational game Simcity 4. We tried to: (1) discuss the pedagogical potentialof the game Simcity 4 for Math classes, about role´s teacher and (2) check thepotentialities of the computational game for the assimilation of the mathematicalconcepts and for the attribution of meaning to the mathematical objects Weconsidered as subjects four pupils with an average age of fifteen. For theanalysis, we considered the oral and written comments of the subjects and thefield diary of the investigator. The analysis was made taking into considerationthe moments of pedagogic intervention with games in mathematical learning(GRANDO, 2000, 2004). The pedagogical characteristics of the game Simcity 4became evident — how it offered to the subjects the opportunity to elaborate andthink about the different strategies for the resolution of problems, raisinghypotheses, analyzing strategies and discussing results. It offered, moreover, afavourable environment for the mobilization / ownership of mathematicalconcepts involving the analysis of graphs and tables, making decisions facingthe costs and benefits and exploration of space the game with proportion.

Buscamos: (1) discutir o potencial pedagógico do jogo Simcity 4 para as aulas de Matemática, no que diz respeito ao papel do professor e (2) verificar as potencialidades do jogo computacional para a apropriação dos conceitos matemáticos e para a produção de significados para os objetos matemáticos. Foram considerados como sujeitos quatro alunos com idade média de quinze anos. Para a análise, consideramos os registros orais e escritos dos sujeitos e o diário de campo da pesquisadora. A análise foi processada tendo em vista os momentos de intervenção pedagógica com jogos na aprendizagem matemática (GRANDO, 2000, 2004). Evidenciaram-se as características pedagógicas do jogo Simcity 4 — como este ofereceu aos sujeitos a oportunidade de elaborar e refletir sobre as diferentes estratégias de resolução de problemas, levantando hipóteses, analisando estratégias e discutindo resultados.
