Resumo: The objective of the article is to critically revisit the thesis of the end of the social centrality of work, comparing it with the contemporary Brazilian context and with the following research questions: (i) What does this context reveal about the centrality of control over labor relations for the process of valorization of capital?; (ii) How is it possible to understand the pandemic data of the Brazilian labor market in light of this theoretical debate, without losing sight of its imbrications with the previous scenario? We conjugate theoretical (with a focus on the sociology of work) and empirical (based on secondary data from the Brazilian labor market) research. We observed that the context propitiated by the pandemic made explicit the inequalities and contradictions of the capital-labor conflict, highlighting the centrality of work for capitalist accumulation.
