The environmental impact of genetic editing in Brazil: an approach from global bioethics

Resumo: | Brazil has one of the largest environmental biodiversity in the world and at the same time, when it comes to biotechnology’s application, it is the second country in the use of genetically modified organisms. This scenario denotes a fruitful field for the application of promising genetic editing technologies in the environmental and agricultural areas. However, to the benefits offered by this technique, there is an emerging need to list environmental risks and proper management and environmental protection in global terms. In this context, from the manipulation of living organisms and systems, unpredictability emerges as one of the singularly problematic factors. Despite this, the ethical conflicts that emerge from it can be guided by an ethics of responsibility, based on a primary duty of precaution over possible possibilities. This article, based on the framework of global bioethics, addresses such unpredictability and conflicts, considering that the ongoing debate on such biotechnological innovations for genetic manipulation requires not only expanding the horizon of analysis on environmental issues, but also and deepening the reflections that take into account aspects specific to the genome manipulation techniques in use, meanly in the challenging Brazilian context, which has such great biodiversity. |

Este escenario denota un campo fructífero para la aplicación de tecnologías de edición genética prometedoras en las áreas ambiental y agrícola. Sin embargo, además de los beneficios que ofrece el uso de la técnica, surge la necesidad de enumerar los riesgos ambientales involucrados, con el fin de asegurar su adecuada gestión y protección ambiental en términos globales. En este contexto, de la manipulación de organismos y sistemas vivos, la imprevisibilidad surge como uno de los factores singularmente problemáticos. A pesar de ello, los conflictos éticos que surgen de ella pueden estar guiados por una ética de la responsabilidad, basada en un deber primordial de precaución ante posibles perspectivas de futuro. Este artículo, basado en el marco de la bioética global, aborda tal imprevisibilidad y conflictos, considerando que el debate en curso sobre tales innovaciones biotecnológicas para la manipulación genética requiere no solo ampliar el horizonte de análisis en temas ambientales, sino también y profundizar las reflexiones que toman dar cuenta de aspectos específicos de las técnicas de manipulación del genoma en uso, y especialmente en el desafiante contexto brasileño, que tiene tanta biodiversidad.O Brasil detém uma das maiores biodiversidades ambientais do mundo e ao mesmo tempo, quando se trata do consumo de biotecnologias, é o segundo país no uso de organismos geneticamente modificados. Este cenário denota um campo fecundo para a aplicação das promissoras tecnologias de edição genética na área ambiental e agropecuária. No entanto, aos benefícios oferecidos pelo uso da técnica, há a necessidade emergente de se elencar os riscos ambientais envolvidos, visando assegurar o seu gerenciamento adequado e a proteção ambiental em termos globais. Nesse contexto, de manipulação de organismos e sistemas vivos, a imprevisibilidade emerge como um dos fatores singularmente problemáticos. Apesar disso, os conflitos éticos que dela emergem podem ser pautados a partir de uma ética da responsabilidade, baseada em um dever primário de precaução sobre as perspectivas futuras possíveis.
