Resumo: | This article seeks to address themes that concern the body and its manufacture associated with the ideologies of “modernity” and the conformations of national states and their institutions. More specifically, it deals with the relationship, from the historical and anthropological point of view, between rational use of the body and the forging of a “collective spirit” through gymnastics, physical education and sports, relations mediated by state institutions, especially the Brazilian Army. After a brief overview of the links between nationalisms and the emergence of the armies, which, according to the analysis undertaken, operate systematically and structurally through “exchange” relations, I move to the Brazilian case and to the phases established by some authors to characterize each period, its influences, approaches and distances with regard to relations between the Army, its doctrine and hierarchical organization, physical education as a “discipline” or “pedagogy” and sports, taken as “embodied practices”. Finally, I deal with the most recent associations between the military and national sports policy by promoting Olympic sport; in the end, a reintegration of the Brazilian Army into the scenario of sports management, which points once again to the relationship between the disciplined body and the “collective spirit” engendered by nationalism. |

Universidade Estadual de Campinas2020-12-13info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionTextoTextoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/otherapplication/pdfhttps://econtents.bc.unicamp.br/inpec/index.php/tematicas/article/view/1230710.20396/tematicas.v28i56.12307Tematicas; v. 28 n. 56 (2020): Militares e militarismos: perspectivas interdisciplinares sobre o universo militar; 255-280Tematicas; Vol. 28 No. 56 (2020): Militaries and militarism: interdisciplinary perspectives on the military universe; 255-280Tematicas; Vol. 28 Núm. 56 (2020): Militares y militarismo: perspectivas interdisciplinarias sobre el universo militar; 255-2802595-315Xreponame:Temáticas (Campinas.
