Varejão (2009) buscou sintetizar a trajetória dos estudos em torno da diferenciação do PB em relação ao Português Europeu (PE) a partir dos seguintes recortes discursivos: i) discurso impressionista: cujas formulações se estabeleceram sob a polarização entre os puristas e os nacionalistas linguísticos (i.e., a polêmica entre Pinheiro Chagas e José de Alencar); e ii) discurso científico: que estaria isento de paixões normativistas, levando adiante pesquisas metodologicamente rigorosas, visando refutar ou confirmar hipóteses sobre a estrutura do PB. Assim, se inicialmente a discussão tinha como motivação uma questão identitária - trazendo a independência brasileira em relação a Portugal para o âmbito da língua -, com o desenvolvimento da linguística brasileira, o assunto vai tomando ares cada vez mais técnico, embora ainda cercado de polêmicas. As análises comparativas entre o PB e o PE desempenharam um importante papel nesse debate; tendo o foco, a princípio, voltado aos "brasileirismos" no nível lexical - incluindo empréstimos lexicais junto às línguas ameríndias e africanas. Posteriormente, o contato linguístico durante a colonização do Novo Mundo foi retomado e apontado como o principal fator da diferenciação entre as línguas faladas aqui e em Portugal. É precisamente sobre o contato linguístico que vai se apoiar a hipótese crioulista, segundo a qual o PB não só compartilha características com línguas crioulas (como afirmou Coelho), mas também faria parte desse conjunto linguístico. Mais recentemente, esta hipótese enfrentou um relativo enfraquecimento em função tanto das evidências empíricas dos dados linguísticos e históricos quanto da confusão dentro da Crioulística relacionada ao conceito de língua crioula, sobre o qual não há ainda uma definição consensual. O estado atual desse debate secular opõe principalmente os estudos de Lucchesi, Baxter e Ribeiro (2009) - que abandonam o rótulo de "língua crioula" para o PB sem, contudo, renunciar ao processo de crioulização, essencial no conceito/modelo de transmissão linguística irregular - com os de Naro e Scherre (2007), para quem os fenômenos atestados como evidências de uma crioulização do PB estariam presentes já em dialetos portugueses do período arcaico. Dito isto, este projeto de pesquisa objetiva demonstrar: (i) que o debate sobre o estatuto da língua portuguesa falada no Brasil sofre não só com as polêmicas ideológicas, mas também com a indefinição na Crioulística relacionada aos seus conceitos-chave e à interpretação das línguas pidgin e crioulas como entidades linguísticas cujos traços estruturais são distintivos, com a suposição de que os fenômenos de mudança presente em tais línguas são exclusivos; (ii) que outras fontes de pesquisas históricas no Brasil permitem interpretações diversas sobre o processo de formação e desenvolvimento do país, permitindo também outras interpretações sobre a evolução do PB; e (iii) que estas pesquisas históricas são fundamentais para compreender o processo de dialetação do PB, fazendo com as referidas hipóteses teleológicas sejam insatisfatóriasAbstract: More than a century after Adolpho Coelho affirmed that Brazilian Portuguese (BP) shared certain characteristics with creole dialects, the debate about its origin and formation is still alive, becoming one of the longest and most profitable discussions in Brazilian Linguistics. Varejão (2009) sought to synthesize the trajectory of the studies about the differentiation of BP in relation to European Portuguese (EP) from the following discursive cuts: i) impressionist discourse: whose formulations were established under the polarization between purists and linguistic nationalists (i.e., the controversy between Pinheiro Chagas and José de Alencar); and ii) scientific discourse: which would be exempt from normativist passions, carrying out methodologically rigorous researches, aiming at refuting or confirming hypotheses about the BP structure. Thus, if initially the discussion had as a motivation an identity issue - bringing the Brazilian independence in relation to Portugal to the scope of the language -, with the development of Brazilian linguistics, the subject is taking more and more technical air, although still surrounded by controversies . The comparative analyzes between BP and EP played an important role in this debate; focusing at first on "brasilianismos" at the lexical level - including lexical borrowing alongside Amerindian and African languages. Later, the linguistic contact during the colonization of the New World was resumed and pointed out as the main factor of the differentiation between the languages spoken here and in Portugal. It is precisely on the linguistic contact that the Creole hypothesis is based, according to which the BP not only shares characteristics with creole languages (as Coelho asserted), but also would be part of this linguistic set. More recently, this hypothesis has faced a relative weakening as a function of both the empirical evidence of linguistic and historical data and the confusion within crioulistics related to the Creole language concept, about which there is still no consensual definition. The current state of this secular debate opposes mainly the studies of Lucchesi, Baxter and Ribeiro (2009) - who abandon the label of "creole language" for BP without, however, renouncing the process of creolization, essential in the concept/model of transmissão linguística irregular - with those of Naro and Scherre (2007), for whom the phenomena attested as evidences of a creolization of BP were already present in Portuguese dialects of the archaic period. That said, this research project aims to demonstrate: (i) that the debate about the status of the Portuguese language spoken in Brazil suffers not only with ideological polemics, but also with the lack of definition in crioulistics related to its key concepts and the interpretation of pidgin and creole languages as linguistic entities whose structural features are distinctive, with the assumption that the phenomena of change present in such languages are exclusive; (ii) that other sources of historical research in Brazil allow different interpretations of the process of formation and development of the country, also allowing other interpretations on the evolution of BP; and (iii) that these historical researches are fundamental to understand the PB dialectal process, making teleological hypotheses, as in Lucchesi, Baxter and Ribeiro (2009), unsatisfactoryMestradoLingüísticaMestre em LinguísticaCAPES1722904[s.n.]Pagotto, Emilio Gozze, 1961-Avelar, Juanito Ornelas deFinbow, Thomas DanielUniversidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP).
