This article aims to reflect on journalism and the coverage given to the theme of abandoned childhood and the semantic treatment given to this childhood, from the perspective of Cremilda Medina, historians of childhood, among other scholars. To evaluate aspects of journalistic production, reports were published in the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo. The observation about this theme seeks to understand the semantic changes in the nominations of street children in journalistic coverage. Two cases were examined in this research: that of the Italo boy, 10 years old, who, when stealing a car, was killed by military police; and that of the Waldick boy, 11, who was killed by the Metropolitan Civil Guard in São Paulo. Among the considerations, it was understood a fragmentation of information, provoked from the proposals of the guidelines, in the editorial division of the contents and in the emphasis given to the subjects.
