Education and slavery: books found in a maroon house in Província do Espírito Santo of the 19th century

Resumo: In this essay we present a document revealing the location of books and manuscripts in a Maroon house. Initial questions are raised regarding expectations of education, possession of books between slaves and freedmen. Education and reading experiences could be close not only to captives who worked in the big house, but also slave quarters and maroons. Even among the maroons, there were no social isolations that excluded access to slave quarters, trade exchanges and the circulation of Atlantic news. In view of the issues of teaching African history, slavery and post-emancipation, as well as the recognition of territories, ancestral cultures and the implementation of public policies, we evaluated the possibilities for reflection on the past of slavery and the present of maroon education.

Se plantean preguntas iniciales con respecto a las expectativas de educación, posesión de libros entre esclavos y libertos. Las experiencias educativas y de lectura podrían estar cerca no solo de los cautivos que trabajaban en la casa grande, sino también de los cuartos de esclavos y quilombos. Incluso entre los cimarrones, no hubo aislamientos sociales que excluyeran el acceso a barrios de esclavos, intercambios comerciales y la circulación de noticias del Atlántico. En vista de los problemas de la enseñanza de la historia africana, la esclavitud y la post-emancipación, así como el reconocimiento de territorios, culturas ancestrales y la implementación de políticas públicas, evaluamos las posibilidades de reflexión sobre el pasado de la esclavitud y el presente de la educación cimarron.Neste ensaio apresentamos um documento inédito revelando a localização de livros e manuscritos num rancho de quilombola. São evocadas questões iniciais a respeito das expectativas de alfabetização, posse de livros entre escravizados e libertos. Horizontes de letramento podiam estar próximos não só de cativos que trabalhavam na casa grande, mas também de senzalas e mocambos. Mesmo nos quilombos, não havia isolamentos sociais que excluíam o acesso as senzalas, as trocas mercantis e a circulação de notícias atlânticas.
