Resumo: The article aims to investigate the diagnosis construction of epidemic madness produced around the “choreiform abasia” epidemic in the suburb of Itapagipe, Salvador, in 1882, defended by Brazilian physician Raimundo Nina Rodrigues (1862-1906). It was a brain dysfunction that caused involuntary movements in lower limbs when patients were walking. Its epidemic character, the studies argued, was attributed to contagion by imitation. Based on the methodology proposed by British historian Quentin Skinner, the article investigates Nina Rodrigues’ intentions and motives in elaborating the diagnostic of chorea epidemic focusing on two determinant axis of contagion: the propitious social environment and the predisposition of patients.
