Cleaning, medicating and educating: considerations on public health in Curitiba in the early decades of the republican era

Resumo: The article addresses how legal decisions and actions of the Paraná State government regarding public health, combined with Curitiba municipal rules, were published and thematized in the newspapers of the state Capital. This work especially focuses on the years ranging from 1890 until the end of the 1920s, a time when the city and surrounding region were the driving force of the economy of Paraná State. The newspapers reproduced some of these decisions, transcribing state bulletins and publishing articles and notes with medical considerations, popular demands and practices regarding public health in Curitiba. They also reported on how medical and government propositions on urban health and fighting disease were combined with activities for popular health education and warnings against so-called popular healers.

Os periódicos reproduziram algumas dessas determinações, transcreveram informes estatais e publicaram artigos e notas com considerações médicas, reivindicações populares e práticas relativas à saúde pública em Curitiba; além de indicarem como proposições médico-governamentais sobre salubridade e combate às doenças eram conjugadas com a educação da população em saúde e com ações contra os chamados curadores populares. Ensinamentos de Edward P.
