Resumo: Diabetes Mellitus is a pathological disorder caused by a lack of insulin production (type 1 DM) or by resistance to this hormone (type 2 DM). Periodontal disease is an inflammatory dental disease associated with dental plaque affecting the tissues that surround and support the teeth. The relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease has been a source of concern for dental surgeons, as diabetes can influence the onset and development of periodontal disease by increasing the difficulty of gum healing, changing the glucose metabolism and making it difficult to control. Both have similar risk factors and changes in the immune response of the individual, which may cause dysfunctions. Thus, this literature review assesses the relationship between these two diseases and the impact of inadequate treatment of diabetes on periodontal disease progression.

A doença periodontal é uma doença dentária inflamatória associada à placa dental acometendo os tecidos que circundam e suportam os dentes. A relação entre o diabetes e a doença periodontal têm sido origem de preocupações para os cirurgiões dentistas, na qual o diabetes pode influenciar no aparecimento e desenvolvimento da doença periodontal aumentando a dificuldade de cicatrização da gengiva, mudando o metabolismo da glicose e dificultando seu controle. Ambas apresentam fatores de riscos similares e alteração na resposta imunológica do indivíduo, podendo causar disfunções.
