Resumo: Although the advancement of endodontics, errors still happen during endodontic treatment, what can cause failure, being the retreatment necessary. A very important phase in the retreatment is the opening the root canal. This study aimed to discuss two techniques for opening the root canals filled with guta percha and cement (AH Plus, Sealapex, Endofill, Sealer 26). The manual technique, was used manual file; and the automated technique, was used the ProTaper System. It was observed which technique removes more remaining filling material from the root canal and which requires less time to do this removal. It was made the literature review using as database: Pubmed and Scielo. The articles used are from 2011 to 2021, including articles in Portuguese and English. The exclusion criteria were not consistent themes with the research, articles that did not approach the comparison between opening with the ProTaper System and manual files. Were selected 16 articles for this literature review. It was concluded that in both techniques, the material was not completely removed, however, when the techniques were used concomitantly (ProTaper + manual file), the results were better. In relation to time, the ProTaper System obtained faster results when compared to manual file.

Uma etapa muito importante, na realização do retratamento, é a etapa de desobturação do canal. O presente estudo, teve como objetivo de discutir duas técnicas de desobturação dos canais radiculares, que estavam obturados com guta-percha e cimento (AH Plus, Sealapex, Endofill, Sealer 26). Sendo a técnica manual, utilizando limas manuais; e a técnica automatizada, utilizando o Sistema ProTaper. Foi observado, qual a técnica que remove mais material obturador remanescente do canal radicular e qual necessita de menos tempo para fazer essa remoção. Foi realizada revisão de literatura, utilizando como base de dados: Pubmed e Scielo. Os artigos utilizados são de 2011 a 2021, incluindo artigos em português e inglês. Os critérios de exclusão, foram temas não condizentes com a pesquisa, artigos que não abordaram a comparação entre a desobturação com o Sistema ProTaper e limas manuais. Foram selecionados 11 trabalhos para essa revisão de literatura. Concluiu-se, que em ambas as técnicas, o material não foi removido completamente, porém, quando as técnicas foram usadas de forma concomitante (ProTaper + limas manuais), os resultados foram melhores.
