A New Technique in Genetic Engineering CRISPR/CAS9 and its Ethical Impact: Advances and Challenges of its Application from the Perspective of the Dignity of the Human Person

Resumo: : The possible social consequences from the use of Genetic Technologies in human beings are discussed. The novel technique CRISPR-CAS9 is focused upon due to the great innovation it brought in the area. Social inequalities that may arise with the dissemination of the practice and the social impact it will cause on its implantation will be discussed from the perspective of the principle of human dignity. The possibility of a wider use of advanced eugenic resources is examined for a new category of super humans formed by individuals who access these resources to the detriment of others left in lower categories and destined to have less privileged roles within society. Results show that progress in technology and science, albeit not shunned, should be employed and incorporated to humanity prudently and with respect.

Se investiga, en especial, la nueva técnica llamada CRISPR-CAS9, que trajo gran innovación en esa área. Se discuten, a la luz del principio de la dignidad de la persona humana, las desigualdades sociales que pueden advenir de la diseminación de esa práctica y el impacto social que causará, cuando de su implantación. Se examina también, la posibilidad de la ampla utilización de los avanzados recursos de eugenesia crear una nueva categoría de la “súper-humanos”, formada por individuos con acceso a esos recursos, en detrimento de otros, que permanecerían en categorías inferiores, predestinados a desempeñar papeles menos privilegiados en la sociedad. Se concluye, entonces, aunque no se deba renunciar a los avances de la ciencia y de la tecnología, es con prudencia y evaluación que ellos deben ser incorporados a la humanidad.O objetivo deste artigo é desenvolver uma análise reflexiva a respeito das possíveis consequências sociais que poderão decorrer do uso de tecnologias de edição genética em seres humanos. Investiga-se, em especial, a nova técnica denominada CRISPR-CAS9, que trouxe grande inovação nessa área. Discutem-se, à luz do princípio da dignidade da pessoa humana, as desigualdades sociais que podem advir da disseminação dessa prática e o impacto social que causará, quando de sua implantação. Examina-se, também, a possibilidade da ampla utilização dos avançados recursos de eugenia criar uma nova categoria da “super-humanos”, formada por indivíduos com acesso a esses recursos, em detrimento de outros, que permaneceriam em categorias inferiores, fadados a desempenhar papéis menos privilegiados na sociedade.
