Resumo: This article examines the rise of the English copyright system, which dates back to the Statute of Anne, considered to be the first copyright law. For such purpose, it is used a descriptive and deductive methodology, fundamentally based on a bibliographical review and on the investigation of the legislation and of the precedents. The work starts from the invention of the press, going through the period of the granting of privileges, until the enactment of the Statute of Queen Anne. It also examines the creation of the company of stationers of London, the issue of the Licensing Act of 1662 and the dispute between booksellers in Scotland and England. The results obtained indicate that the Statute of Queen Anne did not have as its main objective the protection of authors, but such protection was eventually admitted as a reflection of judicial decisions.

Para este fin, se utiliza una metodología descriptiva y deductiva, basada fundamentalmente en una revisión bibliográfica y en una investigación de la legislación y de la jurisprudencia. El texto empieza con la invención de la imprenta, pasa por el periodo de concesión de privilegios hasta la promulgación del Estatuto de la Reina Ana. También examina la creación de la Company of Stationers of London, la edición de la Ley de Licencias de 1662 y la disputa entre libreros de Escocia e Inglaterra. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que el Estatuto de la Reina Ana no tenía como objetivo primordial la protección de los autores, pero dicha protección acabó siendo admitida como consecuencia de decisiones judiciales.O presente texto analisa o surgimento do sistema inglês de proteção autoral, que remonta ao Estatuto da Rainha Ana (Statute of Anne), considerado a primeira lei de copyright. Para tanto, utiliza-se de metodologia descritiva e dedutiva, baseada fundamentalmente em uma revisão bibliográfica e na investigação da legislação e da jurisprudência. O trabalho parte da invenção da imprensa, passando pelo período da concessão de privilégios, até a promulgação do Estatuto da Rainha Ana. Também examina a criação da company of stationers of London, a edição do Licensing Act de 1662 e a disputa entre livreiros da Escócia e da Inglaterra.
