Atendimento para pacientes com necessidades especiais na graduação em odontologia: uma revisão da literatura.

Insecurity and fear are common feelings of the dentist who, after training, does not feel able to offer individualized and humanized care to patients with special needs. This is justified by the lack of contact with these patients during graduation. Considering that these patients need extended preventive dental care, since they are not fully capable of performing oral care by themselves, it is important to include the discipline Care of Patients with Special Needs in the Dentistry undergraduate course. Based on this, the present study aims to evaluate the importance of this discipline during the Dentistry graduation, presenting its benefits both to the students and to the already graduated professionals. To this end, we used a narrative review of the literature on the inclusion of the discipline in question, as well as the analysis and selection of articles from journals indexed in the Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and the CAPES Periodicals Portal. Thus, with this study, we conclude that the inclusion of the discipline of Care ofPatients with Special Needs (AOPNE) in the Dentistry Graduation course is strictly fundamental for the formation of the dentist, so that he/she can recognize the special needs of the patients and be able to offer them a humanized and appropriate care to the conditions that they may present.
