 ResumoO sistema estadual de ensino superior no Estado de São Paulo conta com três universidades consolidadas (USP/UNICAMP e UNESP) e com um número significativo de Instituições Municipais de Ensino Superior (IMES). O objetivo geral deste artigo é destacar a gênese das IMES do Estado de São Paulo, na segunda metade do século XX, e o objetivo específico é mostrar que, no seu desenvolvimento, essas instituições são manifestações do poder local em articulação com o poder federal, visando a atender às exigências da classe média ascendente por mais vagas no ensino superior. Esta pesquisa apresenta ainda informações quantitativas sobre as IMES do Estado de São Paulo, sua história e memória, destacando sua importância e presença quantitativamente significativa no sistema público e evidencia sua contribuição para a interiorização e regionalização do ensino superior neste Estado.Palavras-chave: Ensino superior ;História da educação; Instituições Municipais de Ensino Superior (IMES).History of the development of higher education towards rural regions in the State of São Paulo: Municipal Institutions of Higher EducationAbstractThe state system of higher education in the State of São Paulo comprises three consolidated universities (USP/UNICAMP and UNESP) as well as a significant number of Municipal Institutions of Higher Education (IMES). The general purpose of this paper is to outline the origins of IMES in the State of São Paulo in the second half of the twentieth century. The specific aim is to show that the development of these institutions reflects the interests of the local government in partnership with the federal government, aiming to meet the demands of a rising middle class for increased access to higher education. Additionally, this research presents quantitative information on IMES in the State of São Paulo, their history and memory, highlighting their importance and quantitatively significant presence in the public system. It also addresses the contribution of these institutions in fostering higher education in rural regions of the State of São Paulo.
