Resumo: Although Brazil is a continental country with a lot of land with potential for planting, Brazilian rail transport in the period from 1890 to 2016 fell short of the needs of the country and the mesh is relatively small compared to other countries that presented more economic development. The objective of the present study is to present a panorama of the historical evolution of the Brazilian railway network between 1890 and 2016. A bibliographical research of an indirect source is carried out in which one seeks to know the evolution occurred in the period. There is a period in which there is a government incentive for highways to the detriment of rail transport and, even so, evolution is occurring, in the most recent years mainly through the process of privatization of the sector and the concession of stretches to the private initiative..

El objetivo del presente estudio es presentar un panorama de la evolución histórica de la red ferroviaria brasileña entre 1890 a 2016. Se realiza una investigación bibliográfica de fuente indirecta en la que se busca conocer la evolución ocurrida en el período. Se observa que hay un período en el que existe el incentivo de los gobiernos a las carreteras en detrimento del transporte ferroviario y, aún así, la evolución está ocurriendo, en los años más recientes principalmente a través del proceso de desestatización del sector y la concesión de extractos sector privado.Apesar do Brasil ser um país de dimensões continentais e com muita terra com potencial de plantio, o transporte ferroviário brasileiro no período de 1890 a 2016 ficou aquém das necessidades do país e a malha é relativamente pequena se comparada com a de outros países que apresentaram mais desenvolvimento econômico. O objetivo do presente estudo é apresentar um panorama da evolução histórica da malha ferroviária brasileira entre 1890 a 2016. Realiza-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica de fonte indireta na qual se busca conhecer a evolução ocorrida no período.
