Teenager’s eating habits from urban and rural areas of a county of Pernambuco

Resumo: This study aimed to compare teenager´s eating habits from a public school in Glória de Goitá, county of the state of Pernambuco, who lived in urban and rural areas. A total of 232 adolescents, aged between 11 and 15 years old, participated in the study. A semi-quantitative questionnaire on food habits and frequency was applied. Regarding habits, it was observed that adolescents in urban areas consumed more added salt. Regarding the number of meals eaten per day, the result was similar between the two areas. Adolescents living in rural areas performed more exercises per week when compared to those living in urban areas. As for the frequency of food consumption, very similar values were observed in relation to the consumption of protein products, more frequently for protein of vegetable origin such as beans. Both fruits and vegetables were little consumed by adolescents in both areas of residence. The data found showed that eating habits in urban and rural areas were similar.

The data found showed that eating habits in urban and rural areas were similar.Este estudio tuvo como objetivo comparar los hábitos alimentarios de adolescentes de una escuela pública de Glória de Goitá, municipio del estado de Pernambuco, que vivían en áreas urbanas y rurales. Participaron en el estudio un total de 232 adolescentes con edades comprendidas entre los 11 y los 15 años. Se aplicó un cuestionario semicuantitativo sobre hábitos y frecuencia de alimentación. En cuanto a los hábitos, se observó que los adolescentes de la zona urbana consumían más sal adicional. En cuanto al número de comidas realizadas al día, el resultado encontrado fue similar entre las dos áreas. Los adolescentes que viven en áreas rurales realizan más ejercicios por semana en comparación con los que viven en áreas urbanas. En cuanto a la frecuencia de consumo de alimentos, se observaron valores muy cercanos en relación al consumo de productos proteicos, con mayor frecuencia para proteínas de origen vegetal como el frijol. Tanto las frutas como las verduras eran poco consumidas por los adolescentes en ambas zonas de residencia. Los datos encontrados mostraron que los hábitos alimentarios en las zonas urbanas y rurales eran similares.Este estudo teve como objetivo comparar hábitos alimentares de adolescentes de uma escola pública em Glória de Goitá, município do estado de Pernambuco, que residiam em área urbana e rural. Participaram do estudo 232 adolescentes, com idade entre 11 e 15 anos. Foi aplicado questionário semiquantitativo de hábitos e frequência alimentar. Em relação aos hábitos, observou-se que adolescentes da área urbana consumiam maior quantidade de sal adicionado. Em relação ao número de refeições realizadas por dia o resultado encontrado foi similar entre as duas áreas. Os adolescentes que residiam na zona rural realizaram mais exercícios por semana quando comparado aos residentes na zona urbana. Quanto à frequência de consumo alimentar, observou-se valores bem próximos em relação ao consumo dos produtos proteicos, com maior frequência para proteína de origem vegetal como o feijão. Tanto as frutas como as hortaliças eram pouco consumidas pelos adolescentes de ambas as áreas de moradia.
