Resumo: Objective: to investigate the association between the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), region, degree of urbanization and municipal typology. Methods: data from the prevalence of EBF by Brazilian municipality from 2019 to 2021 were extracted from the Food and Nutritional Surveillance System. The prevalence of EBF was classified as poor/fair and good/very good. Data from region, municipal typology and degree of urbanization were extracted from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. To evaluate the results, the Chi-square test was used and the Odds Ratio was estimated. Results: final sample obtained from 223,764 children distributed in 1603 municipalities. The prevalence of EBF in Brazil was 48.7%, considered fair. The Northeast region was associated with an EBF rate classified as poor/fair (p<0.001). There was an association between a high degree of urbanization and the rate of good/very good EBF (p<0.026). There was also an association between urban typology and the rate of EBF of the good/very good type (p<0.011). Conclusion: The results presented reveal differences in the practice of AME according to urbanity and region, which demands health policies and actions that consider the particularities of the territories in which they are inserted.
