Resumo: The availability of mineral reserves located in the State of Minas Gerais makes this one of the most important in the Brazilian mining industry. However, for the commercialization of ores, in terms of content and grain size required by the market, a beneficiation process is required, which generates the by-product the tailings, usually destined for containment dams, which have a great potential for pollution. Thus, this research aimed at the classification of tailings dams located in the State of Minas Gerais. For this purpose, the documentary analysis of the data contained in the State dams inventory for the year 2017 was used. The 302 dams registered in the inventory were characterized in terms of class, height, volume, spatial distribution and stability condition. The results showed that most of the tailings dams present in the State are of high environmental damage potential but characterized by a low height (<15 m). In addition, the cities of Ouro Preto, Itabirito, Brumadinho, Nova Lima, Itabira, Congonhas and Uberaba concentrate the largest number of these structures. Tailings dams with ensured stability represent the majority, nevertheless, a minority presents the stability not ensured by the auditor. Thus, safety and risk management are necessary to avoid structural accidents and, in case of failure, for a rapid response to minimize negative environmental impacts.

Research, Society and Development2019-01-01info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/68310.33448/rsd-v8i2.683Research, Society and Development; Vol. 8 No. 2; e4382683Research, Society and Development; Vol. 8 Núm. 2; e4382683Research, Society and Development; v. 8 n. 2; e43826832525-3409reponame:Research, Society and Developmentinstname:Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)instacron:UNIFEIporhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/683/646Copyright (c) 2019 Neliam Cristina Gomes, Rosiane Kátia dos Santos, Juni Cordeiro, Míriam Barros Assis Duarte, Pablo Lopes Quintão, José Luiz Cordeiroinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessGomes, Neliam CristinaSantos, Rosiane Kátia dosCordeiro, JuniDuarte, Míriam Barros AssisQuintão, Pablo LopesCordeiro, José Luiz2020-03-25T16:07:08Zoai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/683Revistahttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/indexPUBhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/oairsd.articles@gmail.com2525-34092525-3409opendoar:2024-01-17T09:26:03.228404Research, Society and Development - Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)false
