Management of solid waste during the pandemic COVID-19 in the region of Amazon Western, Brazil

Resumo: | The World Health Organization (WHO) pointed out that the pandemic COVID-19 infected more than 364 million peo-ple, with the number of deaths exceeding 5.6 million people. In this scenario, Brazil was one of the most affected wor-ldwide by the pandemic COVID-19, which had adverse effects on the environment, public health and economic aspects. This study aimed to evaluate the potential environmental impacts caused by the generation of urban solid waste during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Amazon region, having as a case study the municipality of Humaitá, in the state of Ama-zonas. The study corresponds to a qualitative analysis, where initially, a bibliometric review was carried out regarding solid waste management during the pandemic COVID-19. The assessment of the impacts on the solid waste management system in the municipality of Humaitá was based on qualitative-quantitative characterization data, in addition to the estimation of the number of face masks discarded daily in the municipality. The results of state-of-the-art for solid was-te management in the pandemic COVID-19, showed that research on waste management in the pandemic COVID-19 period is incipient in the Amazon region. It was possible to observe an estimate of approximately 49 thousand face masks discarded daily in the municipality of Humaitá, Amazonas, these scenarios converge to the increase of environ-mental and public health damages. From this study, it was possible to infer that the pandemic COVID-19 can point to a series of adversities on the solid waste management system, with environmental, economic, sanitary and social conse-quences. |

En ese escenario, Brasil fue uno de los más afectados a nivel mundial por la pandemia de la COVID-19, que tuvo efectos adversos en el medio ambiente, la salud pública y aspectos económicos. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar los potenciales impactos ambientales causados por la generación de residuos sólidos urbanos durante la pandemia de COVID-19 en la Amazonía, teniendo como caso de estudio el municipio de Humaitá, en el estado de Amazonas. El estudio corresponde a un análisis cualita-tivo, donde inicialmente se realizó una revisión bibliométrica respecto al manejo de residuos sólidos durante la pande-mia del COVID-19. La evaluación de los impactos en el sistema de gestión de residuos sólidos en el municipio de Hu-maitá se basó en datos de caracterización cualitativa-cuantitativa, además de la estimación del número de cubrebocas desechados diariamente en el municipio. Los resultados del estado del arte para la gestión de residuos sólidos en la pandemia de COVID-19 mostraron que la investigación sobre la gestión de residuos en el período de la pandemia de COVID-19 es incipiente en la región Amazónica. Se pudo observar una estimación de aproximadamente 49 mil cubre-bocas desechados diariamente en el municipio de Humaitá, Amazonas, estos escenarios convergen al aumento de daños ambientales y de salud pública. A partir de este estudio, fue posible inferir que la pandemia de COVID-19 puede señalar una serie de adversidades en el sistema de gestión de residuos sólidos, con consecuencias ambientales, económicas, sanitarias y sociales.A Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) apontou que a pandemia COVID-19 infectou mais de 364 milhões de pessoas, com o quantitativo de mortes superior a 5,6 milhões de pessoas. Neste cenário, o Brasil foi um dos mais afetados mundialmente pela pandemia do COVID-19, o que proporcionou efeitos adversos no meio ambiente, na saúde pública e nos aspectos econômicos. Este estudo objetivou avaliar os potenciais impactos ambientais causados pela geração de resíduos sólidos urbanos durante a pandemia de COVID-19 na região Amazônica, tendo como estudo de caso o município de Humaitá, no estado do Amazonas. O estudo corresponde a uma análise qualitativa, onde inicialmente, foi realizado uma revisão bibliométrica referente a gestão de resíduos sólidos durante a pandemia COVID-19. A avaliação dos impactos no sistema de gestão de resíduos sólidos do município de Humaitá foi baseada em dados da caracterização quali-quantitativa, além da estimativa do número de máscaras faciais descartadas diariamente no município. Os resultados do estado da arte para a gestão de resíduos sólidos na pandemia COVID-19, demonstraram que as pesquisas sobre a gestão dos resíduos em período pandêmico da COVID-19 são incipientes na região Amazônica. Foi possível observar uma estimativa de aproximadamente 49 mil máscaras faciais descartadas diariamente no município de Humaitá, Amazonas, estes cenários convergem para o aumento de danos ambientais e de saúde pública.
