Nutritional supplementation and its association with health and body composition of bodybuilding practitioners

Resumo: | This quantitative study aimed to analyze the consumption nutritional supplements in an academy in the Castanhal-PA city, as well to evaluate the anthropometric changes caused by the dietary reeducation the subjects studied. Twenty individuals, 10 men and 10 women, aged between 20 and 35 years, participated in this study. Two recall questionnaires were applied, one about how the individual was fed before starting his training period and one about his feeding after three months by training, and a third questionnaire related the dietary supplementation. The results showed significant improvements in the subjects' dietary reeducation. As for dietary supplementation, the most consumed supplements were the rich in proteins (60% to men and 83% to women) and branched amino acids, which are consumed by 30% to men and 67% to women. Most supplements were consumed on their own initiative for 38% of men. The observed and reported benefits with supplementation were strength and muscle mass gain - in which 50% of men and 60% of women had these gains. Being that also a minority of the sample reported some side effects that were associated with the food supplement. Positive changes in anthropometry were also observed. It was concluded that there is a strong relation between physical exercises and changes in eating habits, and the association with the use of dietary supplements. |

En este estudio participaron 20 personas, 10 hombres y 10 mujeres, con edades comprendidas entre los 20 y los 35 años. Se aplicaron dos cuestionarios de recuerdo, uno sobre cómo era la dieta del individuo antes de comenzar su período de entrenamiento y otro sobre su dieta después de tres meses de entrenamiento, y un tercer cuestionario relacionado con la suplementación dietética. Los resultados mostraron mejoras significativas en la reeducación dietética de los sujetos. En cuanto a la suplementación alimentaria, los suplementos más consumidos fueron los ricos en proteínas (60% de hombres y 83% de mujeres) y aminoácidos ramificados, que fueron consumidos por 30% de hombres y 67% de mujeres. La mayoría de los suplementos se consumieron por iniciativa propia para el 38% de los hombres. Los beneficios observados e informados con la suplementación fueron ganancias en fuerza y masa muscular, en las que el 50% de los hombres y el 60% de las mujeres mostraron estas ganancias. Además, una minoría de la muestra informó algunos efectos secundarios asociados con el complemento alimenticio. También se observaron cambios positivos en la antropometría. Se concluye que existe una fuerte relación entre el ejercicio físico y los cambios en los hábitos alimentarios, y la asociación con el uso de complementos alimenticios.O presente estudo de cunho quantitativo, teve como objetivo analisar a suplementação nutricional e a sua relação com a saúde e composição corporal de praticantes de musculação em uma academia da cidade de Castanhal-PA, bem como avaliar as mudanças antropométricas ocasionadas em decorrência da reeducação alimentar dos sujeitos pesquisados. Participaram deste estudo 20 indivíduos, sendo 10 homens e 10 mulheres, com idade entre 20 e 35 anos. Foram aplicados dois questionários recordatários, um sobre como era a alimentação do indivíduo antes de iniciar seu período de treinamento e um sobre sua alimentação após três meses de treinamento, e um terceiro questionário relacionado à suplementação alimentar. Os resultados apontaram melhoras significativas na reeducação alimentar dos sujeitos. Quanto a suplementação alimentar, os suplementos mais consumidos foram os ricos em proteínas (60% dos homens e 83% das mulheres) e aminoácidos ramificados, sendo estes consumidos por 30% dos homens e 67% das mulheres. A maior parte dos suplementos foi consumida por iniciativa própria para 38% dos homens. Os benefícios observados e relatados com a suplementação foram o ganho de força e de massa muscular - em que 50% dos homens e 60% das mulheres apresentaram esses ganhos. Sendo que também uma minoria da amostra relatou alguns efeitos colaterais que foram associados ao suplemento alimentar. Mudanças positivas na antropometria também foram observadas.
