Resumo: Water scarcity is a growing problem and is already affecting the entire planet, which is worsening in semi-arid regions. Thus the main objective of this research was to verify the water consumption situation and the perception of the settlers regarding the water issue in the Santa Mônica settlement, located in the rural area of the municipality of Pombal, in the upper Sertão of Paraíba. As a result it was possible to identify that, despite the good housing with which they were contemplated, there is no type of education and health structure, and no water source within the settlement. Residents are mostly fueled by caravans and do not trust the quality of this water, but do not take care to treat it before consuming. Its average daily consumption is approximately 70 to 93 liters per person, which indicates consumption below what is suggested by the UN, in order to meet the basic needs of an individual. This situation becomes even more worrying, when analyzed the fact that these people are unable to carry out their main activities, which are agriculture and animal husbandry, since they are totally dependent on water.

Así el objetivo principal de esta investigación fue verificar la situación del consumo de agua y la percepción de los asentados en cuanto a la cuestión hídrica en el Asentamiento Santa Mónica, ubicado en la zona rural del municipio de Pombal, en el alto sertão paraibano. Como resultados fue posible identificar que, a pesar de las buenas viviendas con las que fueron contemplados, no existe ningún tipo de estructura de educación y salud, y ninguna fuente de agua dentro del asentamiento. Los habitantes en su mayoría son abastecidos sólo por carros-pipas y no confían en la calidad de esa agua, pero no tiene cuidado de tratarla antes de consumir. Su consumo promedio diario es de aproximadamente 70 a 93 litros por persona, lo que indica un consumo por debajo de lo sugerido por la ONU en cuanto a suplir las necesidades básicas de un individuo. Esta situación se vuelve aún más preocupante cuando se analiza el hecho de que esas personas no pueden ejercer sus actividades principales, que son agricultura y crianza de animales, ya que dependen totalmente del agua.A escassez de água é um problema crescente e já atinge todo planeta, e que se agrava nas regiões semiáridas. Assim o objetivo principal desta pesquisa foi verificar a situação do consumo de água e a percepção dos assentados quanto à questão hídrica no Assentamento Santa Mônica, localizado na zona rural do município de Pombal, no alto sertão paraibano. Como resultados foi possível identificar que, apesar das boas moradias com as quais foram contemplados, não existe nenhum tipo de estrutura de educação e saúde, e nenhuma fonte de água dentro do assentamento. Os moradores em sua maioria são abastecidos apenas por carros-pipas e não confiam na qualidade dessa água, porém não tem cuidado de trata-la antes de consumir.
