Maternal mortality: epidemiological profile of a state of northeast Brazil

Resumo: The present study aims to analyze the epidemiological profile of maternal mortality in the State of Alagoas in the period between 2009 and 2018, through a quantitative approach, the study being of the descriptive and ecological type, using a public secondary data source. 290 maternal deaths of women residing without status in Alagoas were identified in the analyzed period, the majority (38.3%) in the age group of 20 to 29 years old, brown (72.8%), with 1 to 7 years of study (41.4%), single (46.6%), with 74.5% of deaths due to direct obstetric cause in the perinatal period; of all deaths in the analyzed period, 92.1% occurred in the hospital environment and the first causes was hypertensive syndromes (20.3%). It is concluded that the epidemiological profile of maternal mortality in Alagoas is known to be similar to the Brazilian profile and different from the world reality in relation to the main cause of deaths.

It is concluded that the epidemiological profile of maternal mortality in Alagoas is known to be similar to the Brazilian profile and different from the world reality in relation to the main cause of deaths.El presente estudio tiene como objetivo analizar el perfil epidemiológico de la mortalidad materna en el estado de Alagoas en el período de 2009 a 2018, mediante un enfoque cuantitativo, siendo un estudio descriptivo y ecológico, utilizando fuentes públicas de datos secundarios. 290 muertes maternas de mujeres residentes fuera del estado de Alagoas identificadas en el período analizado, la mayoría (38,3%) en el grupo de edad de 20 a 29 años, morenas (72,8%), con 1 a 7 años de estudio (41 , 4%), soltera (46,6%), siendo 74,5% de las muertes por causas obstetrícas perinatales directas; Del total de muertes en el período analizado, el 92,1% se produjeron en un entorno hospitalar y la principal causa fueron los síndromes hipertensivos (20,3%). Se concluyó que el perfil epidemiológico de la mortalidad materna en Alagoas era similar al de Brasil y diferente a la realidad mundial en cuanto a la principal causa de las muertes.O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar o perfil epidemiológico da mortalidade materna no Estado de Alagoas no período entre 2009 e 2018, por meio de uma abordagem quantitativa, sendo o estudo do tipo descritivo e ecológico, utilizando fonte de dados secundária pública. Foram identificadas 290 mortes maternas de mulheres residentes no estado de Alagoas no período analisado, a maioria (38,3%) na faixa etária de 20 a 29 anos, pardas (72,8%), com 1 a 7 anos de estudo (41,4%), solteiras (46,6%), sendo 74,5% dos óbitos ocorridos por causa obstétrica direta no período perinatal; de todos os óbitos do período analisado 92,1% ocorreram no ambiente hospitalar e a principal causa sendo as síndromes hipertensivas (20,3%).
