Reading and writing performance of students compared to parental education and socioeconomic level

Resumo: Objective: Analyse reading (time to read) and writing performance of schoolchildren of third year of municipal public schools of Porto Alegre-RS metropolitan region, correlated with the socioeconomic status and parents’ schooling. Method: Seventy-six schoolchildren took part of the survey, being 41 (54%) female and 35 (46%) male, with ages between eight years and a month and nine years and nine months. Parents and/or responsable for schoolchildren received a quiz from Brazilian Research and Company Association that investigated socioeconomic and parenthood education level. To evaluate reading performance was used the Task of Reading of Words and Nonsense words Isolated. This evaluates the accuracy of the oral reading of isolated words and nonsense words. To evaluate writing the Writing after saying test (reduced version). Results: When comparing total writing errors and parental education, analysis didn’t show any difference, both for father education (p=0.7) and mather education (p=0.5), this means that total errors were independent of parental education. This tendency was already observed for total writing errors when compared to family socioeconomic level (p=0.6). Conclusion: Reading and writing performance is more related to formal writing teaching than to socioeconomic level and parental education.

Método: 76 estudiantes participaron en el estudio, 41 (54%) mujeres y 35 (46%) entre ocho años y un mes y nueve años y nueve meses. Los padres y/o tutores de los estudiantes recibieron en un cuestionario de la Asociación Brasileña de Empresas e Investigación que investigó aspectos socioeconómicos y educativos de los padres. Para evaluar el rendimiento de lectura, se utilizó el instrumento "Isolated Word/Pseudowords Reading Task". Evalúala precisión de la lectura oral de palabras aisladas y pseudo palabras. Para la evaluación de la escritura, se utilizan las pruebas de escritura en Dictado (versión reducida). Los datos se analizaron utilizando el entorno R. Resultados: Al comparar los errores totales en la escritura y la escolarización de los padres, los análisis mostraron que no había diferencia, tanto para la escolarización del padre (p=0.7) como para la escolarización de la madre (p=0.5), es decir, el número total de errores por escrito era independiente de la categoría educativa. Esta misma tendencia también se observó en relación con el número total de errores por escrito en comparación con el nivel socioeconómico de la familia (p=0.6). Conclusión: La interpretación en lectura y escritura está más relacionada con la enseñanza formal de la escritura que con el nivel socioeconómico y educativo de los padres.Objetivo: Analisar o desempenho de leitura (acurácia e tempo de leitura) e escrita de escolares do 3º ano da rede pública municipal da região metropolitana de Porto Alegre - RS, correlacionado com o nível socioeconômico e a escolaridade dos pais. Método: Participaram do estudo 76 escolares, sendo 41 (54%) do sexo feminino e 35 (46%) do masculino, com idades entre oito anos e um mês e nove anos e nove meses. Os pais e/ou responsáveis dos escolares receberam um questionário da Associação Brasileira de Empresas e Pesquisa que investigava aspectos socioeconômicos e de escolaridade dos pais. Para avaliar o desempenho de leitura foi utilizado o instrumento “Tarefa de Leitura de Palavras/Pseudopalavras Isoladas”. Este avalia a precisão da leitura oral de palavras e pseudopalavras isoladas. Para a avaliação da escrita foi utilizada a Prova de Escrita sob Ditado (versão reduzida). Os dados foram analisados usando o ambiente R. Resultados: Ao comparar o total de erros na escrita e a escolaridade dos pais, as análises evidenciaram que não houve diferença, tanto para a escolaridade do pai (p=0.7) quanto para a escolaridade da mãe (p=0.5), ou seja, o total de erros na escrita mostrou-se independente da categoria escolaridade. Essa mesma tendência também foi observada em relação ao total de erros na escrita quando comparadas ao nível socioeconômico da família (p=0.6).
