Curriculum analysis of the academic training of radiology technologists for professional performance as a dosimetrist

Resumo: | The Technologist in Radiology is a professional who integrates the multiprofessional team in the health area, and works with the application of ionizing radiation in radiodiagnosis and therapy. In the radiotherapy sector, this professional can act as a radiology technologist or dosimetrist. The main objective of this article is to analyze the curriculum of the academic training of radiology technologists for professional performance as dosimetrists. This is a qualitative-quantitative research with a documentary analysis approach. The political-pedagogical projects of six Brazilian federal public institutions that offer graduate courses in technology in radiology were listed. From these documents the program contents were correlated with the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD) Curriculum Guideline for Dosimetrist Training. The current Brazilian regulations do not contemplate the role of the dosimetrist in the radiation therapy sector. The technologist in radiology contemplates in his/her education the prerequisites suggested by the AAMD for entering a residency course in dosimetry; however, in Brazil, the professional is unable to enter residency programs. The non-uniformity of the programmatic content among the disciplines was identified. Of the six institutions studied, one of them does not include radiotherapy in its political-pedagogical project, which hinders a single and specific training that ensures the unified offer of this training. |

En el sector de la radioterapia, este profesional puede trabajar como tecnólogo radiológico o como dosimetrista. El objetivo principal del presente artículo es analizar el currículo de la formación académica de los tecnólogos radiológicos para el desempeño profesional como dosimetristas. Se trata de una investigación cuali-cuantitativa con un enfoque de análisis documental. Se han enumerado los proyectos político-pedagógicos de seis instituciones públicas federales brasileñas que ofrecen cursos de posgrado en tecnología en radiología. A partir de estos documentos, los contenidos programáticos se correlacionaron con la Guía Curricular para la Formación en Dosimetría de la American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD). Las normas brasileñas actuales no contemplan el papel del dosimetrista en el sector de la radioterapia. El tecnólogo radiológico contempla en su curso de formación los prerrequisitos sugeridos por la AAMD para la admisión a un curso de residencia en dosimetría; sin embargo, en Brasil, el profesional no puede inscribirse en programas de residencia. Se identificó la no uniformidad de los contenidos programáticos entre las disciplinas. De las seis instituciones estudiadas, una de ellas no incluye en su proyecto político-pedagógico la disciplina de radioterapia, lo que dificulta una formación única y específica que asegure la oferta unificada de esta formación.O Tecnólogo em Radiologia é um profissional que integra a equipe multiprofissional na área da saúde, e atua com a aplicação da radiação ionizante no radiodiagnóstico e terapias. No setor de radioterapia, este profissional pode atuar como tecnólogo em radiologia ou como dosimetrista. O principal objetivo deste artigo é analisar o currículo da formação acadêmica dos tecnólogos em radiologia para atuação profissional como dosimetrista. Trata-se de uma pesquisa com abordagem quali-quantitativa, do tipo análise documental. Foram elencados os projetos político-pedagógicos de seis instituições públicas federais brasileiras, que oferecem o curso superior de tecnologia em radiologia. A partir destes documentos os conteúdos programáticos foram correlacionados com a Diretriz Curricular de Formação dos Dosimetristas da American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD). As normativas brasileiras vigentes não contemplam a atuação do dosimetrista no setor de radioterapia. O tecnólogo em radiologia contempla em seu percurso formativo os pré-requisitos sugeridos pela AAMD para ingresso em um curso de residência em dosimetria, entretanto, no Brasil o profissional é impossibilitado de ingressar em programas de residência. Foi identificado a não uniformidade dos conteúdos programáticos entre as disciplinas.
