Quality of life in cochlear implant users

Resumo: Purpose: To evaluate the quality of life of cochlear implant users. Methods: Cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study, in which the World Health Organization Quality of Life-bref (WHOQOL-bref) questionnaire was applied to assess quality of life. The questionnaire assesses the physical, psychological, social relations and environment domains. Speech recognition was also assessed using an open set sentence test. The study included 25 cochlear implant users with at least one year of use, older than 18 years old, with a mean age of 46.79 years. For data analysis, the following statistical tests were used: Spearman's correlation, ANOVA test and T-Student test (p-value <0.05). Results: Users of cochlear implants obtained an average of 78.70% correct answers in the speech recognition test of sentences in open set, in silence. It was observed in the WHOQOL-bref questionnaire that in the question of “global quality of life” and in the “psychological” domain, patients performed better, these scores being close to those of normal listeners. The “environment” domain was the one that patients had the worst performance. Conclusion: Patients demonstrated good quality of life, performing better in the “psychological” domain and presenting a satisfactory self-assessment of quality of life. It is suggested that the WHOQOL-bref questionnaire be used to complement the monitoring of cochlear implant users.

Métodos: Estudio transversal, observacional y descriptivo, en el que se aplicó el cuestionario de la Organización Mundial de la Salud Quality of Life-bref (WHOQOL-bref) para evaluar la calidad de vida. El cuestionario evalúa los dominios físico, psicológico, social y ambiental. El reconocimiento del habla también se evaluó mediante una prueba de oraciones abiertas. El estudio incluyó a 25 usuarios de implantes cocleares con al menos un año de uso, mayores de 18 años, con una edad promedio de 46,79 años. Para el análisis de los datos se utilizaron las siguientes pruebas estadísticas: correlación de Spearman, prueba ANOVA y prueba T-Student (valor de p <0,05). Resultados: Los usuarios de implantes cocleares obtuvieron una media de 78,70% de respuestas correctas en la prueba de reconocimiento de voz en frases en un conjunto abierto, en silencio. En el cuestionario WHOQOL-bref se observó que en la pregunta de “calidad de vida global” y en el dominio “psicológico”, los pacientes se desempeñaron mejor, siendo estas puntuaciones cercanas a las de los oyentes normales. El dominio "medio ambiente" fue el que los pacientes tuvieron el peor desempeño. Conclusión: Los pacientes demostraron una buena calidad de vida, se desempeñaron mejor en el dominio “psicológico” y presentaron una autoevaluación satisfactoria de la calidad de vida. Se sugiere utilizar el cuestionario WHOQOL-bref para complementar el seguimiento de los usuarios de implantes cocleares.Objetivo: Avaliar a qualidade de vida dos usuários de implante coclear. Métodos: Estudo transversal, observacional e descritivo, no qual foi aplicado o questionário World Health Organization Quality of Life-bref (WHOQOL-bref) para avaliar a qualidade de vida. O questionário avalia os domínios físico, psicológico, relações sociais e meio ambiente. Também foi avaliado o reconhecimento de fala por meio de um teste de sentenças em conjunto aberto. Fizeram parte do estudo 25 usuários de implante coclear com no mínimo um ano de uso, maiores de 18 anos, com faixa etária média de 46,79 anos. Para análises dos dados foram utilizados os seguintes testes estatísticos: Correlação de Spearman, teste Anova e teste T-Student (p-valor <0,05). Resultados: Os usuários de implante coclear obtiveram uma média de acertos de 78,70% no teste de reconhecimento de fala nas sentenças em conjunto aberto, no silêncio. Observou-se no questionário WHOQOL-bref que na questão da “qualidade de vida global” e no domínio “psicológico”, os pacientes tiveram melhor desempenho, sendo estes escores próximos a de ouvintes normais. O domínio “meio ambiente” foi o que os pacientes tiveram pior desempenho. Conclusão: Os pacientes demonstraram boa qualidade de vida, tendo melhor desempenho no domínio “psicológico” e apresentando uma autoavaliação da qualidade de vida satisfatória.
