Perception of stress among firefighters operating in a barracks of Vale do Taquari/RS

The objective was to identify the incidence of stress among firefighters operating in a barracks of Vale do Taquari/RS. It is a qualitative research of exploratory and descriptive character, carried out with nine firemen through a semi-structured interview containing five questions. For data analysis, the Bardin content analysis was used. The results showed that most professionals consider their work as first aid care; fire fighting; helping people, and other activities. Firefighters express satisfaction and pride about their work while feeling the tension and anxiety of what they are about to meet when they are fired. Physical exhaustion, fatigue and stress emerged per se among the reports. We conclude that the majority of the respondents show feelings and emotions repressed throughout the years of profession; in this way, it is necessary to keep an eye on these professionals because of the emotional load they are exposed daily in the work environment.
