Nomenclature of the pathogenic fungus Histoplasma

Resumo: | Histoplasma is a pathogenic fungus that causes histoplasmosis, an endemic systemic mycosis, due to its occurrence in specific regions. Since the first identification of Histoplasma, terminology changes have occurred, initially based on the microscopic characteristics of the infection findings. Subsequently, it remained for a long time divided into varieties within the H. capsulatum (H. capsulatum var. capsulatum, H. capsulatum var. duboisii and H. capsulatum var. farciminosum). The varieties of the species H. capsulatum were differentiated by biological criteria, based on the affected hosts and the pathogenicity/extent of the disease. Later, the advent of advanced molecular biology techniques favored more precise stratifications, with the species being allocated to clades (North America clade 1 - NAm1, North America clade 2 - NAm2, Latin America group A - LAmA, Latin America group B - LAmB, Australia, Netherlands, Eurasian and African). More recently, phylogeny assessments allowed inferences about the existence of 17 species distributed in six groups. The genus Histoplasma is currently described, comprising at least four species (H. capsulatum sensu stricto, H. suramericanim, H. mississippiense and H. ohiense), with the possibility of a fifth genetic group (Africa). |

Desde la primera identificación de Histoplasma, se han producido cambios de terminología, inicialmente basados en las características microscópicas de los hallazgos de infección. Posteriormente, permaneció durante mucho tiempo dividida en variedades dentro de la especie H. capsulatum (H. capsulatum var. capsulatum, H. capsulatum var. duboisii y H. capsulatum var. farciminosum). Las variedades de la especie H. capsulatum se diferenciaron por criterios biológicos, con base en los hospedantes afectados y la patogenicidad/extensión de la enfermedad. Más recientemente, las evaluaciones de filogenia permitieron inferencias sobre la existencia de 17 especies distribuidas en seis grupos. Na sequência permaneceu por muito tempo dividida em variedades dentro da espécie H. capsulatum (H. capsulatum var. capsulatum, H. capsulatum var. duboisii e H. capsulatum var. farciminosum). As variedades da espécie H. capsulatum eram diferenciadas por critérios biológicos, com base nos hospedeiros acometidos e pela patogenicidade/extensão da doença. Posteriormente, o advento de técnicas avançadas de biologia molecular favoreceu estratificações mais precisas sendo as espécies alocadas em clados (América do Norte clado 1 - NAm1, América do Norte clado 2 - NAm2, América Latina grupo A - LAmA, América Latina grupo B - LAmB, Austrália, Holanda, Eurasiana e Africana). Mais recente, avaliações de filogenia permitiram a inferência sobre a existência de 17 espécies distribuídas em seis grupamentos.
