Twice-exceptionality in the film “August Rush”: a reflection from a neuropsychological perspective

Resumo: Cinematic art allows for the most diverse real-life scenarios. With this, the cinema has approached issues of neuropsychiatric clinic in several ways. In the film “August Rush”, the producers address the theme of Giftedness. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the characteristic behaviors of this condition that are portrayed in the film through the neuropsychological perspective. In addition, behaviors within a possible double exception were analyzed. The method used for the analysis was based on the Charles Maguerez Arch Methodology. It was observed that some characteristics among Giftedness can be both confused and interrelated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, which makes the diagnosis of this comorbidity difficult, as already described in the literature. The study of film analysis made it possible to associate the character's behaviors with the literature on Giftedness.

Con esto, el cine ha abordado los problemas de la clínica neuropsiquiátrica de varias maneras. En la película "August Rush: escucha tu destino", los productores abordan el tema de la superdotación. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este estudio es analizar los comportamientos característicos de esta afección que se muestran en la película a través de la perspectiva neuropsicológica. Además, se analizaron los comportamientos dentro de una posible doble excepción. El método utilizado para el análisis se basó en la Metodología del Arco Charles Maguerez. Se observó que algunas características entre los superdotados pueden confundirse e interrelacionarse con el trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad, lo que dificulta el diagnóstico de esta comorbilidad, como ya se describió en la literatura. El estudio del análisis cinematográfico permitió asociar los comportamientos del personaje con la literatura sobre superdotación.A arte cinematográfica permite os mais diversos cenários da vida real. Com isto, o cinema tem abordado questões da clínica neuropsiquiátrica de diversas maneiras. No filme “O Som do Coração”, os diretores abordam a temática das Altas Habilidades/Superdotação. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo é analisar os comportamentos característicos desta condição que são retratados no filme através da perspectiva neuropsicológica. Além disso, foram analisados comportamentos enquadrados em uma possível dupla excepcionalidade. O método utilizado para a análise baseou-se na Metodologia do Arco de Charles Maguerez. Foi observado que algumas características entre as Altas Habilidades/Superdotação podem ser tanto confundidas quando interrelacionadas com o Transtorno do Déficit de Atenção com Hiperatividade, o que torna difícil o diagnóstico desta comorbidade, conforme já descrito na literatura.
