Resumo: Objective: to verify what are the popular practices used for otalgia and cleaning of the external auditory canal. Methodology: qualitative research conducted by interviewing people known in their cities for having knowledge about popular practices, who recognized at least one practice used for earache; 54 people were interviewed. The applied questionnaire contained socio-demographic issues related to cleaning practices and ear pain. Results: most of the people interviewed (53.70%) are between 40 and 59 years old; 92.59% stated that they use informed practices; the main motivations for the application of the practices are the practicality of doing it, the low cost, as well as the easy access to the products used. The cotton swab was the main object used to clean the external auditory canal; and most practices are administered with heated components. Conclusion: the use of popular practices for ear pain is widespread in society, verifying that their use occurs in high frequency compared to the drugs used in current medicine

Metodología: investigación cualitativa realizada mediante entrevistas a personas conocidas en sus ciudades por tener conocimiento sobre prácticas populares, que reconocieron al menos una práctica utilizada para el dolor de oído; 54 personas fueron entrevistadas. El cuestionario aplicado contenía problemas sociodemográficos relacionados con las prácticas de limpieza y el dolor de oído. Resultados: la mayoría de las personas entrevistadas (53.70%) tienen entre 40 y 59 años; 92.59% declararon que usan prácticas informadas; Las principales motivaciones para la aplicación de las prácticas son la practicidad para hacerlo, el bajo costo y el fácil acceso a los productos utilizados. El hisopo de algodón fue el objeto principal utilizado para limpiar el canal auditivo externo; y la mayoría de las prácticas se administran con componentes calentados. Conclusión: el uso de prácticas populares para el dolor de oído está muy extendido en la sociedad, verificando que su uso ocurre en alta frecuencia en comparación con los medicamentos utilizados en la medicina actual.Objetivo: verificar quais são as práticas populares usadas para otalgia e limpeza do conduto auditivo externo. Metodologia: pesquisa qualitativa realizada por meio de entrevista a pessoas conhecidas em suas cidades por possuírem conhecimento sobre práticas populares, as quais reconheciam ao menos uma prática utilizada para dor de ouvido; sendo entrevistadas 54 pessoas. O questionário aplicado continha questões sócio-demográficas relacionadas às práticas para limpeza e a dor de ouvido. Resultados: maioria das pessoas entrevistadas (53,70%) estão entre 40 e 59 anos; 92,59% afirmaram que utilizam as práticas informadas; as principais motivações para a aplicação das práticas são a praticidade em fazê-la, o baixo custo, bem como o fácil acesso aos produtos utilizados. O cotonete foi o principal objeto utilizado para a limpeza do conduto auditivo externo; e a maioria das práticas são administradas com os componentes aquecidos.
