Indexes of depression and anxiety in psychology students: an exploratory study

Resumo: | When entering university, students go through several transformations in their academic, familiar and social contexts that may make them prone to develop psychopathologies such as anxiety and depression. In this context, this research aimed to identify indexes of depression and anxiety in students in their early and late phases of the Psychology major in a University Center in the countryside of Ceará. The research was conducted with 176 subjects. Tools for data collection were a socioeconomical survey, Beck Depression Inventory, and Beck Anxiety Inventory. In the results, it was observed that 55,42 % of the individuals presented symptoms of moderate and severe anxiety, and 31,24% of the individuals presented symptoms of moderate and severe depression, both prevailing more in women. The practice of physical exercises and involvement in collective activities were associated to prevent these diseases and to improve well-being. The conclusion points to the necessity of deepening the understanding of this phenomenon in such population given that they are individuals in evolving processes and, therefore, more vulnerable. |

Al ingresar a la universidad, el estudiante pasa por varias transformaciones en su contexto social, familiar y académico que pueden hacerlo susceptible al desarrollo de psicopatologías como la ansiedad y la depresión. En este contexto, la presente investigación tuvo como objetivo identificar las tasas de depresión y ansiedad de los estudiantes al inicio y al final de la carrera de Psicología en un Centro Universitario del interior de Ceará. La investigación se llevó a cabo con 176 sujetos. Como instrumentos de recolección de datos se utilizó un cuestionario socioeconómico, el Inventario de Depresión de Beck y el Inventario de Ansiedad de Beck. En los resultados se observó que 55,42% de los individuos presentaba síntomas de ansiedad moderada y severa y 31,24% presentaba síntomas de depresión moderados y severos, ambos más prevalentes en mujeres. La práctica de ejercicios físicos y la participación en actividades colectivas puede estar relacionada con la prevención de estas enfermedades y con la mejora del bienestar de las personas. Se concluye que es necesario profundizar en la comprensión de este fenómeno en esta población, ya que son individuos en desarrollo y, por tanto, más vulnerables.Ao adentrar na universidade, o estudante passa por diversas transformações em seu contexto social, familiar e acadêmico que podem torná-lo suscetível ao desenvolvimento de psicopatologias como ansiedade e depressão. Neste contexto, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivo identificar os índices de depressão e ansiedade de estudantes do início e do final do curso de Psicologia de um Centro Universitário no interior de Ceará. A pesquisa foi realizada com 176 sujeitos. Utilizou-se como instrumentos de coleta de dados um questionário socioeconômico, o Inventário de Depressão de Beck e o Inventário de Ansiedade de Beck. Nos resultados, observou-se que 55,42% dos indivíduos apresentaram sintomas de ansiedade moderados e graves, e 31,24% apresentaram sintomas de depressão moderados e graves, sendo ambos os sintomas mais prevalentes nas mulheres. A prática de exercícios físicos e o envolvimento em atividades coletivas podem estar relacionados com a prevenção dessas enfermidades e para a melhora do bem-estar dos indivíduos.
