Parasitic contamination of public squares in the City of João Pessoa, Paraíba

Resumo: Animals can attend public places such as beaches, public squares and parks, which can result in public health problems. The soil contaminated by helminth eggs and larvae is a way of transmission, serving as an important indicator of the occurrence of cutaneous and visceral larva migrans. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potencial of zoonotic contamination of parasites in public squares sands of the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba - Brazil. Therefore, sand samples and feces were collected from dogs and/or cats 40 public squares, and subsequently analyzed. In the results, 95% (38/40) of the public squares analyzed were contaminated. Using the methods already mentioned, a total of 456 samples of feces and sand were analyzed and 208 were positive for helminthes. Of these 208 positive samples, 45.9% (200/436) were sand and 47.5% (8/17) were feces. In this study were found the eggs (62.4%) and larvae (30.9%) of Ancylostoma spp., eggs (0.26%) and larvae (5.5%) of Strongyloides spp., and eggs of Toxocara spp. (0.59%) and Dipylidium caninum (0.19%). The presence of different types of parasites have an important epidemiological significance, which indicates the existence of favorable environmental conditions for the development of these microorganisms, especially in relation to possible occurrence of cutaneous and visceral larva migrans. These results show that there is a risk to the health of the population that attends these environments without properly care.

El suelo contaminado por huevos y larvas de helmintos sirve como ruta de transmission y es un indicador importante de la aparición de larvas migrans cutáneas (LMC) y larvas migrans viscerales (LMV). El objetivo de este studio fue evaluar la contaminación por parásitos con potencial zoonótico en las arenas de plazas públicas de la ciudad de João Pessoa, Paraíba. Para ello, se recolectaron muestras de arena y heces de perros y/o gatos de 40 casillas y posteriormente se analizaron. De los lugares evaluados, el 95% (38/40) estaban contaminados. De acuerdo con la metodologia aplicada, ae analizaron un total de 456 muestras de arena y heces y se obtuvo un 45,6% (208/456) de positividad. De estos, el 45,9% (200/436) fueron arena y el 47,5% (8/17) fueron heces contaminadas. Los parásitos encontrados en este studio fueron huevos (62,4%) y larvas (30,9%) de Ancylostoma spp; huevos (0,26%) y larvas (5,5%) de Strongyloides spp y huevos de Toxocara spp (0,59%) y Dipylidium caninum (0,19%). El hallazgo de diferentes tipos de parásitos tiene una importancia epidemiológica significative, indicando la existencia de condiciones ambientales favorables para el desarrolo de estos microorganismos, especialmente en relación a la posibilidad de ocurrencia de LMC y LMV. Estos resultados muestran que existe un riesgo para la salud de la población que atiende estos ambientes.Animais podem frequentar locais públicos como praias, praças e parques públicos, resultando em problemas de saúde pública. Para tanto, foram coletadas amostras de areia e fezes de cães e/ou gatos de 40 praças e, posteriormente analisadas. Das praças avaliadas, 95% (38/40) estavam contaminadas. De acordo com a metodologia aplicada, foram analisadas um total de 456 amostras de areia e fezes e obtido 45,6% (208/456) de positividade. Destas, 45,9% (200/436) eram areia e 47,5% (8/17) fezes contaminadas. Os parasitas encontrados neste estudo foram ovos (62,4%) e larvas (30,9%) de Ancylostoma spp., ovos (0,26%) e larvas (5,5%) de Strongyloides spp. e ovos tanto de Toxocara spp. (0,59%) quanto de Dipylidium caninum (0,19%).
