Symptoms of Common Mental Disorders and occupational performance in the perception of young participants of pre-academic courses

Resumo: Introdution: To join higher education, the young population is submitted to an exam designed to qualify the level of knowledge about the contents of basic education. Nevertheless, the preparation process for joining a university involves stressful events, that can become a risk period for the emergence of common mental disorders and for the satisfactory performance of everyday activities. Objective: This study aimed to identify symptoms of common mental disorders and the occupational performance from the students' perception in a preparatory course for ENEM in the city of Recife/PE. Methodology: Quantitative work and transversal approach, with data presented in the form of relative and absolute frequency. For the data collection, a socioeconomic, demographic, and occupational questionnaire, the Occupational Functioning Self-Assessment Scale and the Self Report Questionnaire, was used. Results and discussion: 38 students, aged between 17 and 24 years, participated in this study. Between the participants, 63.2% showed evidence for the common mental disorder, more apparent in women and related to the depressive-anxious mood, depressive thoughts, and reduced vital energy. Occupational performance concerning the practice of healthy habits and a structured routine also demonstrated damages. There are problems in self-management and organization of time, including sleep hygiene, lack of leisure, and sports activities that affect school performance. Conclusion: Hence, we alert to the need for the necessity of interventions to promote mental health with young people who are going through this stage, to ease adversity, and promote well-being, mental health, and quality of life.

El proceso de preparación universitaria es estresante, siendo un período de riesgo para el brote de trastornos mentales comunes y para el desempeño satisfactorio de sus actividades cotidianas. Objetivo: Este trabajo busca identificar síntomas de trastornos mentales comunes y el desempeño ocupacional partiendo de la percepción de estudiantes de un curso preparatorio para el ENEM de la ciudad de Recife/PE. Metodología: De naturaleza cuantitativa, enfoque transversal, con datos presentados en frecuencia relativa y absoluta. Para reunir los datos se utilizó un formulario socioeconómico, demográfico y ocupacional, haciéndose uso de la Escala de Autoevaluación del Funcionamiento Ocupacional e Self Report Questionnaire. Resultados y discusión: Participaron 38 estudiantes con edades entre 17 y 24 años. Entre los participantes, el 63,2% presentan indicadores de trastornos mentales comunes, siendo más evidentes entre mujeres y relacionados al humor depresivo-ansioso, pensamientos depresivos y disminución de la energía vital. Fueron registrados daños sobre desempeño ocupacional, la práctica de hábitos saludables y la adopción de rutinas estructuradas, evidenciando problemas de autogestión, organización del tiempo, higiene del sueño, falta de ocio y actividades deportivas que repercuten sobre el desempeño escolar. Conclusión: Se alerta la necesidad de intervenciones de la promoción de la salud mental para jóvenes que pasan por esta fase, para conseguir aliviar las adversidades y promover bienestar, salud mental y cualidad de vida.Introdução: Para ingressar no ensino superior, a população jovem é submetida a um exame que qualifica o conhecimento acerca dos conteúdos ministrados durante a educação básica. Contudo, o processo de preparação para o ingresso numa universidade envolve eventos estressores, podendo ser um período de risco para o surgimento de transtornos mentais comuns e desempenho satisfatório das atividades cotidianas. Objetivo: Este estudo buscou identificar sintomas de transtorno mental comum e o desempenho ocupacional a partir da percepção dos estudantes de um curso preparatório para o ENEM da cidade do Recife/PE. Metodologia: Trabalho de natureza quantitativa e abordagem transversal, com dados apresentados em forma de frequência relativa e absoluta. Para a coleta dos dados, utilizou-se um questionário socioeconômico, demográfico e ocupacional, a Escala de Autoavaliação do Funcionamento Ocupacional e o Self Report Questionnaire. Resultados e discussão: Participaram do presente estudo 38 estudantes, com idades entre 17 e 24 anos. Dentre os participantes, 63,2% apresentaram indicativos para transtorno mental comum, mais evidentes nas mulheres e relacionados ao humor depressivo-ansioso, pensamentos depressivos e decréscimo da energia vital. Também foram encontrados prejuízos sobre o desempenho ocupacional quanto à prática de hábitos saudáveis e uma rotina estruturada. Há problemas no autogerenciamento, organização do tempo, incluindo higiene do sono, falta de lazer e atividades esportivas que repercutem sobre o desempenho escolar.
